Artist Biography

Otto de Souza Aguiar

1938–2006

Born in Brazil, Otto Aguiar earned a master’s degree in graphic art and drawing from the University of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro. He began his career teaching drawing and design to architecture students before extensive travel opened a new creative chapter.

Aguiar worked in high fashion in Milan, Paris, and London, including assignments for Harper’s Bazaar Italia. That experience—together with his background in theater and design—shaped the elegance, dramatic composition, and decorative richness of his paintings.

Over nearly three decades, his art became known for vivid color, raised texture, gilded detail, graceful figures, tropical memory, and the recurring umbrella as a symbol of hope and protection. His work appeared at art expos in New York, Tokyo, and Los Angeles and entered prominent public, corporate, and private collections.
